Well if you’ve been waiting for some of those slots to fill in College Station, you can now heave a sigh of relief.
For the past four years the spaces underneath the downtown parking garage on Campbell have been vacant. On Tuesday, the Hamels Foundation changed that when they opened up shop in order to better education in the Springfield area. According to their website, The Hamels Foundation is a non-profit organization “dedicated to bringing an end to extreme poverty and hardship endured by lack of educational support.” The “About Us” section in the website went on to say that they help inner-city schools and other non-profit educational institutions.
If you keep looking you can see the organization has been providing schools all across the nation with thousands of dollars to help educate children. Founded by Philadelphia Phillies’ pitcher Cole Hamels and his wife Heidi Hamels, it’s a great organization that could help the Springfield area in making sure all kids get the education they need. Even if you’re a Cardinals fan, you can still root for this place.
However, this isn’t just about the foundation. It’s also about finally getting a business in those empty slots filled with gravel. The spaces remained empty for a long time until last year a comedy club was supposed to open up. However, that dream came up short when the owner of the future club was arrested. You could imagine how much hair was left on the head of Scott Tillman, the developer of the downtown parking garage.
With the Hamels Foundation breaking the tide, more businesses could follow through. That means Springfield’s downtown could become more developed with more people. That also means the city could clean up that part of downtown making it safer for college students walking home from the bars. However for most of Springfield, that just means more entertaining things to do in the city.

Nice to see people concerned about the ills of our society and trying to do something about it! Also nice to see someone recognizing that and writing about it, so others can be made aware!
