Missouri State’s PRSSA Day was this past Friday, March 18. It was such a great afternoon! There was a good turnout of students from all different majors. The theme of the day was social media. The first speaker, Ryan Knapp (@ryanknapp) talked to us about the value of social media. Ryan is the Digital Manager of NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America). He is responsible for overseeing all NSCAA digital strategy, including NSCAA.com and the association’s e-mail marketing campaigns and social media efforts.

This is Ryan talking to Angela Frizell, the certified media strategist for Heligonix at PRSSA Day 2011.
The theme around Ryan’s entire presentation was the word “do.” He said you should not worry about failing. No one really knows what they are doing 100% with social media because it is so new to everyone.
Ryan gave us the following definition of social media: “Social media are works of user created video, audio, text or multimedia that are published and shared in an electronic environment, such as blog, wiki, instant messaging, email or video hosting site.” Sites like Facebook and Twitter are not social media; they are merely platforms. They are just tools to assist you. Tools should play off your ability to “do.”
He said there is not just one way to “do” social media, and we should be thinking critically about it. Ryan was able to relate social media to LEGOS. There is more than one way to build a LEGO car, and all of the ways are correct. If you avoid the LEGO manual and just build your car the way you want to, it will stand out. He encouraged us to try something new with social media, a new way, and from a different perspective. Any of us could figure out a new way to “do” social media.
Ryan also told us how social media is always evolving, and we must evolve while we do it.
So three words to live by are as Nike says, “Just do it!”
